Mashed Potatoes and Sourmilk

Sister had the chore
Of peeling the potatoes
When she got home from school
And leaving them
Covered with water
In a small pot
Ready for when
Father came home
And lit the stove.

Mash potatoes and sourmilk:
The potatoes were hot,
And sourmilk cold,
And there were two ways to eat it:
The volcano way and
The winter day.

The volcano way
You sculpted a volcano
Out of the mashed potatoes
And poured the sourmilk
Into the crater and the stuff
That overflew on the slopes
You called the lava.

The winter way
You flattened the mashed potatoes
On your plate and then made roads
By dragging a fork across,
And then you poured the sourmilk
And watched it fill the roads
While saying "Winter is coming"
And pretending that you were freezing.
