Vladimir V. Putin,
Whose grandfather cooked for Lenin
Is reading Philip Larkin's
"Homage to a Government",
Sent to him by his London embassy.
Putin's English isn't too good
But Larkin's unadorned prose
Gives him few problems.
He finishes, nods to himself
And says to his underlings
Who stand at attention
Around his desk:
"Now this is exactly
What I've been saying all along;
The only thing I don't understand
I why they call me a dictator
Who's dragging Russia
Into the Middle Ages
And they call him
England's best-love poet".
His underlings wonder
Who this Larkin guy is anyway.
