Samuel S.,
Lodz Ghetto survivor,
Is prepared for my visit--
Rows of photographs
Are spread out on his coffee table.
Him, he says, his name is Stark
Was an associate professor,
A dogmatic communist before the war,
Became a devout Catholic after the war,
A homosexual. friend of the family,
Never believed in God.
This one's name is Fishman,
Lost his whole family,
Was sick in hospital in Israel
A friend came to visit him,
Looking for him,
Spelled his name in Hebrew,
They called, "Where is Pishman?"
Everyone was laughing,
In Hebrew, "p" and "f" are the same.
